We attended the Ottoman Heritage tour with Milan, it was the first of two tours we booked with Belgrade Walking Tours in one day.
My dad and I were a little worried that the tour would be cancelled if not enough people reserved a spot, but that was not the case. We were able to easily find Milan at the meeting spot and quickly learned we were the only two on the tour with him. So imagine that, a bit of a private tour.
I am very happy we had this opportunity because I'm only familiar with modern history in the Balkan region, and it was great to take a moment and learn about the impact of the Ottoman Empire on Serbia. Milan truly was excellent as we went to each individual location with our discussion surrounding each site. He provided a lot of insight and context to everything without ever veering into Orientalism.
Whenever we travel, we love to focus on learning about culture and religion. I've visited a variety of mosques over the years and it was an interesting opportunity to visit the one in Belgrade.
I also loved our tour of Princess Ljubica's residence. The tour honestly increased my interest in the house museum. Without Milan, I would've been a little lost. Overall, every site we visited, that is true but especially this particular house museum. He walked us through the differences in furniture style and fashion throughout the years after Serbia is able to gain independence from the Ottoman Empire.
This piece of 19th Century history is best viewed with a guide because while the changes are obvious, Milan built more context to what was happening with a few fun stories involving romantic drama.
We love all three tours we attended during our time in Belgrade. Each truly made a difference and while meeting with my dad's colleagues in Belgrade, we were very excited to share what we learned and they were excited, too. It helped with the overall learning experience for me. I've spent years as a tour guide in museums/historic sites and genuinely loved and was impressed by every tour we attended.
